Crown lands and smaller, privately owned woodlots supply Groupe de Scieries G.D.S. inc. with all of its raw materials. Various C.A.A.F. guarantee a total over 650 000 m
3 of wood from Crown lands each year. This supply is supplemented by another 150 000 m
3 from the private sector under the supervision of local marketing boards and forestry associations. All forested land for which C.A.A.F. are held are located in the Gaspé Peninsula or in the Lower St. Lawrence region.
All administration and planning activities associated with forest management are the responsibility of a qualified team of professional foresters and forestry technicians under the supervision of Robert Belzile, Vice-President and Forestry chief and Hugues Boudreau, General manager. Every five years, this team drafts an overall forestry management plan for all land administered by Groupe de Scieries G.D.S. inc. Based on current forestry data and projecting 120 years into the future, this plan has a multi-resource development approach. Groupe de Scieries G.D.S. inc. and other stakeholders determine the level of forestry activity that will ensure optimal sustained yield of all resources over a 25-year period. One-year and five-year plans are also drawn up in accordance with the expectations of the various participants.
Through long-term planning, Groupe de Scieries G.D.S. inc. participates in the sustainable development of our forests. We do everything possible to protect and enhance the forest environment, including lakes, rivers, animal habitats, recreational sites, and so on. This also provides various developers with the opportunity to participate in approximately twenty related initiatives each year, thereby promoting the wise use of communal resources.
Groupe de Scieries G.D.S. inc. involves local communities in all forestry management planning, sits on consultation committees, and is proud to balance the various needs of all forest users.
To ensure sustainable forests and a perpetual supply for future generations, forestry professionals at Groupe de Scieries G.D.S. inc. work with numerous local partners on forestry management activities.
